Idle Deepcore Developer Reflects on First Steam Launch's Tough Lessons

Making the leap from development to live game operation proved to be a trial by fire for NoodleBoyTheDev, the solo creator behind Idle Deepcore. The 2D incremental mining game, built in Godot, recently launched on Steam, marking a significant milestone as the developer’s first published title. Despite initial expectations, the launch quickly revealed the demanding realities of a live game.

Initially conceived as a smaller-scale project to gain release experience while a larger title remained in development, Idle Deepcore became an intense learning curve for NoodleBoyTheDev. The developer openly admitted the game wasn't as ready as anticipated, attributing many of the post-launch woes to insufficient playtesting, with only two to three friends providing feedback during development. This limited testing scope meant numerous bugs and performance issues slipped through, especially in the late-game states.

A major oversight was underestimating the dedication of the incremental game community. Players swiftly reached game states that the developer hadn't properly stress-tested, leading to significant performance drops. The days immediately following release were a flurry of activity, with NoodleBoyTheDev recounting “72 hours of almost no sleep,” dedicated to pushing out patches for bugs, performance, quality-of-life improvements, and balancing.

Despite the grueling launch period, the developer expresses profound gratitude for the community’s engagement, noting that all feedback, positive or negative, has been instrumental in refining the game. Idle Deepcore continues to receive support, with NoodleBoyTheDev committed to ongoing patching and improvements in the coming weeks. This intense, hands-on experience has clearly provided invaluable lessons for future projects, underscoring the complexities of game launches, even for smaller-scope titles.
