Pebble Knights Gains 8,500 Steam Wishlists

Pebble Knights, a game developed by a team of four starting as a high school graduation project in 2023, is set to launch into Steam Early Access in just one week. The lead developer, MJ, shared their journey, including lessons learned and data on how they achieved over 8,500 Steam wishlists.

The team's data shows that their wishlists came primarily from Steam Next Fest, with a significant spike of 1,609 wishlists during the 8-day event. Local gaming conventions also proved effective, generating 1,578 wishlists, while organic influencers and initial page launch added 585 and 250 wishlists, respectively. However, paid ads on Google yielded a poor return on investment, with only around 300 wishlists.

MJ highlighted three major mistakes the team made during their development journey. Firstly, they treated their Steam page as a placeholder, neglecting it for 7 months and wasting potential organic traffic. Secondly, they rushed into Next Fest without building enough momentum beforehand, which limited the event's impact. Lastly, they spent grant money on Google Ads, which had a low conversion rate, whereas targeted influencer outreach and physical conventions proved more effective.

The team found that attending physical conventions, such as regional gaming expos, was ten times more effective than online ads, providing honest feedback and a loyal core wishlist base. As Pebble Knights prepares to launch on Steam, the team's experience serves as a valuable lesson for other indie developers on the importance of marketing strategy, community engagement, and timed releases.

With the game's launch on April 13th, the team is now focusing on final preparations and responding to community questions. As an indie game that has come a long way from its high school project roots, Pebble Knights' journey is a testament to perseverance and adaptability in the gaming industry.
